Australian from the start: how LegalScout is transforming SME law firms with NVIDIA Nemotron

Australian law firms have a problem that is not often transparent to them: data they put into their AI tool of choice, even enterprise and pro versions, is leaving Australia and being processed overseas. Client files are privileged and must be protected by law. So when a partner at a Melbourne firm asks where their client's contract goes when they type a question, "somewhere not in Australia" often ends the conversation!
LegalScout is legal AI for Australian SME law firms: the solo practitioners, small partnerships and in-house teams that make up most of the profession and are priced out of enterprise tools. LegalScout helps lawyers draft, review and research faster, with answers grounded in the firm's real documents rather than invented.
Every model run by LegalScout works inside an Australian trust boundary. NVIDIA Nemotron models are a big part of ensuring compliance and trust by keeping the data within sovereign borders.
Nemotron as a first-class model choice
LegalScout doesn't lock firms to one model. Different work has different needs: a fast lookup against a firm's own precedent library is not the same task as legal research across case law.
LegalScout implements model presets with the NVIDIA Nemotron family of LLMs (Ultra, Super, Lightning), running in Australia, responding to questions asked directly against a firm's own document collection. A lawyer checking what their own precedent says about a scenario is not doing open-ended reasoning; they're doing fast, grounded retrieval and synthesis, multiple times a day. A smaller, faster model that stays close to the retrieved text provides the most economical and performant generation of output.
Making the documents readable in the first place
Model choice doesn't matter if the text never makes it out of the file.
Law firms don't work from clean text. They work from PDFs: scanned agreements, image-heavy correspondence, photocopied pleadings, legacy matter packs that look fine to a human and empty to a computer. When text extraction fails, legal AI fails silently. A partner asks for the liability clause, and a model with no clause in front of it produces something plausible instead.
LegalScout leverages NVIDIA Nemotron Parse as the primary OCR path for hard documents. When a lawyer uploads a file, a quick native text extract is done; if the file is effectively a scan, pages are converted to images and sent to Nemotron Parse in parallel. A multi-page scan resolves in seconds rather than a serial crawl. That matters when someone is mid-matter and waiting on intake.
For retrieval, the NVIDIA Nemotron Embed models are used to load, parse, chunk, embed and then store documents in the firm's org-scoped index, ready to retrieve on the next question. That turns contracts, memos and uploads into a searchable knowledge layer where LegalScout pulls passages by meaning rather than keyword.
Voice to Work at the Client Meeting
Legal matters often start well before a document is created: at the first client conference. Handwritten notes are rewritten as file notes, and these may omit details that matter, such as the date the client agreed to, leading to wasted time, rework and lost productivity.
Leveraging NVIDIA Parakeet for speech recognition, LegalScout is the personal digital assistant that joins a client discussion, transcribes and attributes, with the recording and transcript landing directly in the firm's document store. LegalScout then runs Agents on the transcriptions to produce a file note, extract action items, create a statement of work and start preparing the first draft of the client matter.
The same privacy logic applies. Audio of a privileged client conference is about as sensitive as legal data gets, and the ability to run recognition on Australian infrastructure or, further out, on the practitioner's own device is what makes the feature viable for the profession rather than a compliance problem we hand our customers.
Accelerating Legal Work
LegalScout doesn't replace legal advice; it empowers lawyers to stay in control and increase their focus on legal judgement. Every output is drafted for review, not for filing. NVIDIA's suite of tools and models enables LegalScout to produce accurate first-pass outputs, grounded in citations and backed by legal analysis, all inside the trust boundary Australian firms must adhere to.
